In 2011 Jake Harvey moved from Wellington, New Zealand and settled in New York City. While there he found himself working for Tuck Shop, an Australian-style pie shop in the famed Chelsea Market, where he learned the ins and outs of pie-shop management. A fortuitous move to Atlanta, GA in 2018, coupled with a strong bout of homesickness, began his journey to re-create the tastes of home.

Heaps was born out of Jake’s desire to re-create the magic of a New Zealand pie, and to bring a bit of his culture and Whānau to the community in which he now calls home. The humble pie, as any New Zealander knows, is the ultimate comfort meal.

Growing up in the Harvey household, Jake and his siblings were expected to contribute a family meal once a week, and he used this as an opportunity to explore different cuisines. His dad’s curries and chutneys were also a huge part of his childhood and he recalls eating them at least twice weekly. Heaps allows Jake to combine his love of world cuisine, especially curries, with his favorite food of all, the savoury pie.

Jake has put down roots in Atlanta, started a family, and is here to stay. We are so excited to be able to share our story with you. Please come see us and try a pie.

“Heaps is a passion project for me. I wanted to take it back to my Kiwi roots, combining my dad’s humble curries and chutneys with New Zealand savoury classics. Bringing these flavours together takes me back home, and I want to take my customers there, too.”
